About the workshop:

Whatever age or ability, we are all sensory learners.

In this workshop, Richard will look at how to create a sensory classroom which will enable you to offer your students engaging and creative sensory learning opportunities.  

We will start by looking at the basic building blocks of a sensory classroom.  Richard will share an environmental audit for your classroom, which will show you how ‘autism/sensory impairment friendly’ your learning space is.  He will look at how best to carry out the audit and how to interpret the results.  We will go on to explore tips and strategies to improve the identified areas of need, with both easy short - term solutions as well as more expensive or longer-term solutions.

We will also be looking at the principles of Universal Design for Learning in relation to developing universally accessible sensory learning environment for all students.

He will go on to briefly look at the safety considerations in these spaces - with some photographs which clearly illustrate how not to create a sensory learning environment!

What resources do you really need in a sensory classroom?  If your budget is tight, where should you spend and where can you save money?  Richard will look at a variety of ways to modify your existing classroom environment.  We will look at a variety of different ideas you can use in your classroom via photographs and video of existing sensory rooms and classrooms.  Finishing the session will be a collaborative activity to think about your classroom using photos and video of it in its current state.  Richard will help you to begin an ‘action plan’ to create a more sensory space in your classroom.

We move on to ensuring that your pupils are offered appropriate sensory learning experiences wherever they are.  You will be able to link the learning in the sensory room with learning in the classroom - creating a continuous learning experience between the two environments.

We will share a case study on how two special schools here in New Zealand have used Richard’s environmental audit to improve their classroom environment to better meeting the learning needs of the students in their class; and the Impact it has had on student engagement, attention, and learning.

Practitioners working with students who have special educational needs: Teachers, SENCOs, teacher aides, therapists, RTLBs and specialist teachers.

Pre-requisite:

Delegates will be asked to bring along a plan and photos or a short video of their classroom to work with as part of the workshop.
